Banking in Italy: Essentials
Italy's banking landscape has modernized rapidly. While cash is still used, digital payments are widespread. "Conto Corrente" is the standard checking account.
Imposta di Bollo
Be aware of the "Imposta di Bollo" (Stamp Duty), a tax of roughly €34.20 per year applied to accounts with an average balance exceeding €5,000. Some banks absorb this cost as a promotion.
Opening an Account
Residents need a "Codice Fiscale" (Tax Code) to open any bank account. Non-resident accounts exist but are more restrictive and expensive.
